The Yiddish Book Center’s “Stories of Exile” Reading Groups for Public Libraries is a program in which librarians organize reading groups to discuss three books of Yiddish literature in translation.
In the summer of 1934, thirty-seven-year-old American Yiddish poet Jacob Glatstein boarded a trans-Atlantic ship for Europe to visit his dying mother. From New York he sailed to France, traveled by train to Paris, crossed through Nazi Germany, and stopped in Warsaw before continuing on to his hometown of Lublin, Poland. These books were a precursor of what was to come for Jews throughout Europe, as seen by an eyewitness. A short film provided by the Yiddish Book Center precedes the book discussion.
