Presented by the Birmingham Calligraphy Guild
This class is presented by the Birmingham Calligraphy Guild, and sponsored by the Hoover Public Library. Registration and supplies for your first class are free. The BCG and HPL ask that you join the Guild for subsequent classes to allow more patrons the opportunity to attend.
Professional calligrapher Louise Meredith will present an introduction to the lower- and upper-case Foundational Hand. Edward Johnston developed this script in the late 1890s from his study of 10th century manuscripts in the British Museum. He taught the first modern day calligraphy class at the Central School in London in 1899. Foundation is the basic Roman hand that is excellent for teaching lettering to beginners. Foundational hand is used for clarity, proportion and simplicity. Having learned this script as her first broad-pen lettering, Louise has become an accomplished professional calligrapher and teacher. She continues to teach and produce beautiful work. The Guild will have pens, inks and papers for you to try.
The Birmingham Calligraphy Guild, formerly known as Les Enlumineurs, seeks to promote the art of beautiful writing in the Birmingham metropolitan area and surrounding states.
Our membership consists of a very diverse group of calligraphers, from the hobbyist to the full-time professional and every level of interest in between. We come from Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and Kentucky and many of our members travel to Birmingham to participate in the numerous learning opportunities hosted by the guild.
