Learn more about the habitat, pollinators and significance of the Cahaba lily.
Dr. Randy Haddock, retired field director of Cahaba River Society, is a foremost expert about the Cahaba lilies. In fact, Randy’s nighttime, nimble-footed research on the lily shoals observed for the first time the primary pollinator of the lilies, the Plebian sphinx moth. The lily requires a very specialized habitat—swift-flowing water over rocks and lots of sun—and thus is restricted to shoal areas at or above the fall line. In Alabama, the Cahaba lily is restricted to the Black Warrior, Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, and Chattahoochee river systems. Join us as he discusses the significance and beauty of our spectacular Cahaba lilies.
